reading objects

After transferring from BA Textile Design at Chelsea, my introduction to the graphic design course was a lecture and workshop regarding image culture. We were given 5 images, and asked to create a narrative, linear or non-linear, using only the information we can decipher from the visual aspects of the images. The background aims of this unit include exploring material culture, taxonomy and semiotics to explain the objects around us, simultaneously reflecting wider social, cultural and political themes.

To contextualise this, we have been asked to explore the David Usborne collection in the LCC library, a large and idiosyncratic collection of tools and other objects around the 20th century. We need to curate these objects according to personally-defined categories such as shape, size, materials, use or more conceptual ideas. If we create a system to define collated information, we can add new value. This is a fundamental skill in graphic communication which is really exciting to explore. Furthermore, organising objects eliminates irrelevant information and turns collected materials into new insight, and brings recognition to the amazing collection.

This curation and research into the collection must culminate to a group presentation and poster advertising the curated collection of objects. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside other students and create contemporary reference to a historical collection.
