oscar hudson

This week’s Tuesday talk was from director Oscar Hudson. Having recently seen his new music video for Loyle Carner, I was excited to see more of his work and hear him speak.

Works

Loyle Carner - Ottolenghi Loyle Carner sent Oscar the treatment for this himself, such an interesting and inspired video and lovely to see artist involvement being so important.

Young Fathers – Holy Ghost

This video used a military thermal camera with a 300m zoom, controlled using a calculator to read coordinates. This creates such an amazing effect from such a far distance. Probably one of the best music videos/overall films I’ve ever seen.

Bonobo - No Reason

Oscar noted this video was career changing for him – he talks pre and post-Bonobo. All made on 1 set, his in-camera effects are incredible.

Roy Andersson, a swedish director, is a huge inspiration to Hudson. His work is really interesting – constructed tableaux with minimal action yet impeccable detail and atmosphere. I’m looking to watch some of his films and explore more into his work.

What I found so inspiring about Oscar’s talk was the importance he holds in the fact that anyone can make film. Just using an iphone or equivalent production value doesn’t take away any creativity. This made me think about our 16×9 film differently, and just because we don’t necessarily have professional skills or equipment, we can reduce production values but still explore really interesting concepts.
